“Always remember to fall asleep with a dream and wake up with a purpose”
Do you remember as a child, you hated going to bed even when you were tired? That was the case for me – I’d do anything to avoid going to bed. But now, as an adult, I look forward to bedtime! Especially fresh bedding, fresh PJ and fresh out of the shower – aaaah!! In this post, I’ll be sharing with you my bedtime habits which help me drift off to sleep.
The scent of lavender is my go to scent for anything – to destress, relax and sleep. I have a reed infuser of lavender next to my bed, as well as lavender spray and creams.
My favourite cream, Sleepy from Lush is my go to when I’ve just gotten into bed. Putting it on my face, arms and feet, I then relax in bed for 30 minutes before switching off the light.
‘Calm’ – App
Breathing exercises can help soothe your mind and body (as cliche as that sounds) but can help you get off to sleep. If I’m not in a podcast mood, I click onto Calm and put one of the sleep stories on and relax as the narrator tells a fairy tale in a soft and gentle voice. If you don’t want to listen to anyone, you can have background sound effects of your choice – bird song, waves crashing on the beach or space… though there’s no sound!

‘Sleep with Me’ – Podcast
If I’ve heard all of the sleep stories on Calm, I put Sleep with Me on and listen to Scooter drone on in a mono tone voice. I couldn’t even tell you what he’s saying as I generally fall asleep! I’d highly recommend this podcast if you’re having trouble sleeping and want to distract your mind.
Put the phone down and pick that book up! Even with night mode on, your brain will be buzzing after scrolling through social media, or playing Animal Crossing (guilty!) so I tend to distract myself with a book to properly wind down, with my phone on Do Not Disturb from 9pm onwards. I love reading books that don’t require much thought process – I’m currently reading Night Vale, a novel based on the quirky Podcast. It doesn’t make any sense… which is great if you want to switch off and get lost in a surreal fictional world.
Avoid caffeine or anything with sugar in as this will play havoc on your sleep. I tend to drink Pukka’s Night Time tea, infused with lavender, to help my body relax and my mind drift off. Admittedly though, I’m also a sucker for Horlicks!
