Onto The Next Decade

“There’s a stirring in my soul; a restless, wild anticipation. I am staring out into the horizon, as far as I can. I can’t see what’s beyond it – but I can feel it.”

– Lang Leav

I can’t quite believe it.

In less than two weeks time, I’m going to be waking up in my 30’s. A new decade in my life.

A little while ago, I wrote a letter to my younger self reflecting on the last ten years of my life, and while I’m proud of all the achievements I’ve managed to do, I’m even more proud of how far I’ve come. It’s not been an easy ride – far from it. I’ve had days where I’ve struggled with my anxiety, lost people close to my heart and faced difficult circumstances.

But particularly over the last year, I discovered that I’m a lot stronger than I give myself credit for.

Now I’m reaching ‘over the hill‘, I’m facing a new chapter in my life where I’ve got more opportunities to grow and achieve many things.

What are my top priorities for my Thirties?

Emma is stood in a historic corridor, leaning against the window. She has a smile on her face and is reading her hand on her hip. Emma is wearing an emerald green dress and nude shoes.

I could have written down that I want the material aspects i.e. a big house with a white picket fence, but I’m really not that fussy about having these sorts of things. I’m all about the experiences that help me grow.

So ok, buying a house might allow me to have a canvas of my own and have a project to focus on, but I can also have that in a rented house which I look after. The main thing is that I have a roof over my head. For me, life experiences are so much more than the materials in our lives.

One day, you might lose it all – the important part is you have the love and support of those you care about. If you have a roof over your head in some way, and you are just as ambitious and passionate about what you do, then you’ve got my attention.

So perhaps lets rephrase my list…

What do I want to experience, or achieve, in the next decade?

  • Start driving lessons
  • Go on a solo weekend trip
  • Go on *at least* 3 dates
  • Complete my MA dissertation
  • Say yes to everything for a day
  • Get a new tattoo
  • Write a letter for my 40th (Already thinking ahead!)
  • Create a new recipe
  • Go on a dutch dash
  • Go to Edinburgh Fringe Festival again
  • Stay in an AirBnB
  • Visit Paris in the Spring
  • Visit Venice
  • Watch the sunset
  • Stargazing
  • Donate blood
  • Create a capsule wardrobe
  • Reach 3k followers
  • Read one book per month
  • Have a spa day
  • Do things on my own more often – trips to the cinema, go out for food etc.
  • See a West End show
  • Learn the piano
  • Start singing again
  • Draw something each month
  • Create an eBook
  • Start running again – and actually enjoy it!
  • Step out of my comfort zone more often
  • Complete The Visiting Book
  • Go to more gigs

So I now have a favour to ask you, the reader of my blog. As I have written these down and put them in a public domain, I want you to hold me to account for these.

I’m holding myself accountable, but not setting strict deadlines i.e. by 32 I will have done X, Y and Z. Because anything can happen – I may meet the man of my dreams, and end up having a family, or I may face a situation which could be life changing. But these things are something I have always wanted to do.

So if you ever see me out and about – ask how it’s going. Suggest a book, or encourage me to step out of my comfort zone even if I resist.

So bring on the Thirties. I’m scared, but I’m ready.

Until next time,
